How Blackheads Really Form — And Why Washing Doesn't Help

The most common misconception in skincare: Blackheads are caused by dirty skin. Wrong. Comedones are the result of a biochemical process — and understanding it allows you to specifically interrupt it.

What is a Blackhead anyway?

A blackhead (open comedone) forms when a pore becomes clogged with a mixture of sebum, dead skin cells, and bacterial residue. The dark color does not come from dirt — it is caused by oxidation: When the sebum plug comes into contact with oxygen, the melanin oxidizes and turns black.

The 4 Biochemical Causes

  • 1
Sebum Overproduction (Seborrhea) Triggered by hormones (androgens), stress (cortisol), and diet (sugar, dairy products). More sebum = more material for blockages.
  • 2
Slowed Cell Regeneration Dead skin cells are not shed quickly enough and mix with sebum in the pore.
  • 3
Weakened Skin Barrier A damaged barrier increases susceptibility to inflammation — pores react with increased sebum production as a protective reaction.
  • 4
Oxidation at the Pore Opening The sebum plug oxidizes in the air — that's the black color. Not dirt. Chemistry.

Why Washing and Squeezing Don't Work

Aggressive cleansing removes sebum from the surface — but at the same time stimulates the sebaceous glands to overproduce as a compensatory reaction. Squeezing empties the pore short-term, but leaves behind micro-inflammations that accelerate the next blockage.

Scientific Background

Salicylic acid (BHA) is oil-soluble — it is the only acid that can penetrate the pore and dissolve blockages from within. Niacinamide simultaneously regulates sebum production and strengthens the barrier. This combination interrupts the cycle at two points simultaneously.

The Right Solution: BHA + Niacinamide

The DERMAROOT BHA + Niacinamide Serum specifically combines both active ingredients:

  • Salicylic Acid (BHA) — dissolves blockages in the pore, exfoliates from within, reduces existing blackheads from week 1.
  • Niacinamide — regulates sebum production, reduces pore size, strengthens the barrier against new blockages.

Important: In the first 1–2 weeks, a short "purging" may occur — existing blockages come to the surface faster. This is not a setback, but a sign that the acid is working.
