Salicylic Acid (BHA) — The Ingredient That Actually Clears Pores

Not all acids are equal. AHA acids (glycolic acid, lactic acid) work at the skin surface. BHA — beta-hydroxy acid, i.e. salicylic acid — is the only acid that is oil-soluble. That is the decisive difference.

Why Oil-Solubility Changes Everything

Pores are filled with sebum — an oil-based secretion. Water-soluble acids cannot penetrate sebum. Salicylic acid can. It dissolves in sebum, penetrates deep into the pore, and exfoliates from within — right where blackheads and congestion form.

The 5 Mechanisms of BHA

• 1 Intra-pore exfoliation — Dissolves bonds between dead skin cells inside the pore. Congestion is broken up from within.
• 2 Sebum regulation — Reduces excess sebum production by inhibiting lipase activity in the sebaceous glands.

The Right Concentration

BHA is not all the same. Concentration determines depth of action:
