Salicylic Acid (BHA) — The Ingredient That Actually Clears Pores
Not all acids are equal. AHA acids (glycolic acid, lactic acid) work at the skin surface. BHA — beta-hydroxy acid, i.e. salicylic acid — is the only acid that is oil-soluble. That is the decisive difference.
Why Oil-Solubility Changes Everything
Pores are filled with sebum — an oil-based secretion. Water-soluble acids cannot penetrate sebum. Salicylic acid can. It dissolves in sebum, penetrates deep into the pore, and exfoliates from within — right where blackheads and congestion form.
The 5 Mechanisms of BHA
- 1 Intra-pore exfoliation — Dissolves bonds between dead skin cells inside the pore. Congestion is broken up from within.
- 2 Sebum regulation — Reduces excess sebum production by inhibiting lipase activity in the sebaceous glands.
- 3 Antimicrobial action — Inhibits the growth of C. acnes (acne bacteria) directly in the pore — without systemic antibiotics.
- 4 Anti-inflammatory effect — Salicylic acid is a derivative of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) — it has proven anti-inflammatory properties at the skin level.
- 5 Pore refinement — Through regular exfoliation and sebum control, pores appear smaller and finer over time.
The Right Concentration
BHA is not all the same. Concentration determines depth of action:
- 0.5% Gentle introduction for sensitive skin. — Surface-level exfoliation.
- 1% Effective everyday concentration. — Deep pore penetration, well tolerated.
- 2% Maximum OTC concentration. — For stubborn blackheads and acne. Used in the DERMAROOT BHA Serum.
The optimal pH for BHA activity is between 3.0 and 4.0. Outside this range the acid is inactive. The DERMAROOT BHA Serum is formulated to this pH range — efficacy is not a matter of feeling, it is chemistry.
BHA + Niacinamide: The Optimal Combination
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) complements BHA on three levels:
- ✓ Sebum control — Niacinamide reduces sebum production via a different mechanism to BHA. Synergistic effect.
- ✓ Barrier strengthening — BHA exfoliates, niacinamide repairs. No barrier damage from excessive acid action.
- ✓ Brightening — Niacinamide inhibits melanin transfer, reducing post-acne hyperpigmentation.
